Kids can make you more safety conscious.

Every time I think that my home is safe for the kids, I discover some new hazard. I’ve installed the child-locks, outlet covers, and security gates, but the kids still manage to place themselves in harm’s way.

When my daughter was one year old, she wandered into the kitchen and turned the knobs on the stove. I was used to her wandering around the kitchen and didn’t notice what she had done. It wasn’t until I started to smell gas that I realized something was wrong. Thankfully I mitigated the situation before a serious accident occurred.

Another time, my son wandered into my bedroom and consumed some clipper oil that was sitting near my sink. My wife managed to call poison control in time to prevent a serious health problem. And just the other day, my other son slipped of the ladder to his bunk bed because I forget to secure it.

If you have children, you can relate. When your children started crawling and walking, I’m sure that you were shocked by all of the hazards in your home. If you’re like me, you crawled around on your hands and knees to view things from your children’s perspectives and removed or repaired anything that might injure them.

State Farm has always been in the business of helping families remain safe. In fact, they’ve posted several home and auto safety tips on their website. In addition, they’ve given me the opportunity to help one family to make their home a little safer. I’m giving my readers a chance to win a $100 Home Depot gift card to use to purchase tools, material, or equipment to make your household a safe place. To enter the contest, leave a comment answering the following question:

How do you keep your home and your family safe?
