As I mentioned previously, I’m installing new grass in my lawn because a fungus destroyed it. To tackle this project, I attended the Sears “Spring It On Black Friday” Member Private Night event on Sunday, April 17 and met with an expert to get some advice about my project. The expert was knowledgeable and full of helpful tips. Here is the advice he gave me on how to replace the grass in my lawn:

Identify the type of grass in your lawn

The expert told me that St. Augustine is the prevalent grass species in my area. Unfortunately, Sears doesn’t sell grass, but the expert recommended local nurseries where I could get grass at a decent price.

Measure lawn

Get the dimensions of your lawn to determine how much grass to buy. I figured out that I’d need three pallets of grass to cover my lawn.

Till and level existing lawn

To prepare your lawn for new grass, you must remove all traces of the old grass, till the soil, and level the ground so the grass can be installed evenly.

Install new grass

Install the grass across the full lawn. Make sure each square fits snugly against the next.

Water heavily

The expert told me that he’s seen many people expend time, money, and energy to install a new lawn only to have the grass die because they didn’t water the new grass enough. He urged me to water the lawn daily and make sure to use a sprinkler that will cover all areas of the lawn.

After the lawn is installed, fertilize it regularly to help promote growth.

The expert also recommended a few products to help prevent the fungus for damaging my grass again.

After our discussion, he helped me to select the proper rakes, shovels, hoses, and sprinklers to complete my job successfully.
