Should Teachers Be Friends With Their Students on Social Media?

social media

A 79 year-old teacher in New Hampshire was recently fired because she refused to unfriend students on Facebook. The teacher was friends with about 250 current students on her Facebook page, a violation of a district policy preventing teachers from connecting with students via social media.

Superintendent Dr. Middleton McGoodwin said that the the policy is in place to prevent any boundaries from being crossed.

“Facebook is a wonderful communication tool among friends,” said McGoodwin via CBS Boston. “But teachers are not students’ friends.”

I discussed this topic on Fox26Houston along with Carrie Pacini, Founder of Mom2.0 Summit, and author Melissa Williams.

In this segment, we also discuss teachers’ involvement in a state test cheating scandal.
