My Favorite Food – Gumbo

creole gumbo recipe

I’ve always been an adventurous eater. My travels have exposed me to wide variety of foods. Whenever I have the opportunity to try something new and different, I take it. Sometimes I’m terribly disappointed by the taste or texture. Other times I’m pleasantly surprised.

Despite all of the different cuisines that I’ve experienced, my favorite food is still a hot bowl of gumbo. It is the ultimate creole comfort food.

My parents are from Louisiana, where the best cooks on the planet reside. I remember going to my grandmother’s house and smelling the delicious aroma of a fresh pot of gumbo filled with sausage, chicken, shrimp, and sometimes crabs legs. I couldn’t wait to have that first bowl.

Fortunately, my mother was a good student and learned to make gumbo as well as my grandmother did. My mother would prepare a pot of gumbo on Saturday nights so she wouldn’t have to cook on Sundays because she didn’t believe in working on “the Lord’s Day.” That extra night of marinating only made the gumbo taste better when it was time for Sunday dinner.

After years of study and trial and error, I’ve finally learned how to make gumbo as well as the matriarchs of my family. I intend to share this culinary tradition with my kids.

Stay Strong,
