I recently took a 12-hour road-trip with my wife and three kids. Of course, I got the typical “are we there yet comments,” but things weren’t as bad as they could have been if I didn’t have the Sony BDP-SX1000 portable Blu-ray Disc player to entertain the kids with DVDs and music CDs.

I have a built-in DVD player installed in my minivan, but it broke just before our trip was to begin. The Sony BDP-SX1000 portable Blu-ray Disc player was a real lifesaver.

The player’s portability allowed the kids to take turns watching movies and listening to music and there were no arguments about what to watch. The 10.1″ screen was sharp, clear and was not affected too much by glare. The player was even durable enough to withstand a few drops as the kids passed it back and forth. I’m glad that it came with a car adaptor because the battery life peaks at five hours. The trip would have been miserable if the kids didn’t have a way to entertain themselves for the whole duration.

The best thing about the player is that I can also connect it to my TV at home (via HDMI) and use it as a standard DVD player. I watched Blu-Ray versions of “The Matrix” and “The Dark Knight” and I was blown away by the picture clarity and audio. I really wish I had gotten a Blu-Ray player sooner.

The Sony BDP-SX1000 portable Blu-ray Disc player is available at retail stores for $299.99 (or less), but I’d like to give you the opportunity to win one here.

How did you entertain yourself on family road trips when you were a kid?
