I’m a Houstonian and freezing weather is a rare occurrence. I can count the number of times that it has snowed in my lifetime on both hands. That’s why I’ve always been intrigued by cold weather sports such as skiing, ice skating and hockey.
I attended my first hockey match as an adult in Florida, of all places. A few friends and I decided to find out what all of the hoopla was about. We had seats right next to the glass, but we barely used them. We spent the bulk of the game banging on the glass and yelling at the players as they crashed into it. The match was fast and furious and our adrenaline levels shot through the roof as we watched the action. I can’t even remember if our team won, but I do remember how much fun we had.
I’d like to say that my first hockey match turned me into a lifelong fan, but I’d be lying. I didn’t watch or attend another match for another 10 years (I’m from Texas. Football rules). However, the next match I attended, was huge. I was on a business trip in Canada and one of my colleagues asked me if I had any plans for the night. I told him that I didn’t and asked if I’d like to attend and Edmonton Oilers match with him. I said sure and arranged a time to meet him. When I arrived to meet my friend, he said, “I have a special treat for you.” He led me through the crowd and into one of the luxury boxes.
I was amazed by what I saw.
The room was filled with great food, beverages, and comfortable seats. We had a great view of the players and it was an incredible experience.
When I returned to the states, I started watching hockey and attending Aeros games (Houston’s minor league hockey team) with my children. My sons love hockey, especially the fights. Although we don’t have a favorite NHL team, we get excited about the playoffs. This year, we’ve decided to cheer for the Blackhawks because many of our friends live in Chicago. We were originally cheering for the L.A. Kings, but they didn’t make it to the Stanley Cup.
To prepare for our playoff party, my kids and I gathered some snacks, read about the teams online, and found some comfortable spots in the living room. We screamed so loudly during a few do the games that my wife had to ask us if everything was okay. Now my kids are ready to attend a pro game. I guess I’ll have to schedule another trip to Canada.
